California Gold Rush

The Gold Rush is an interesting aspect of the history of the Golden State.  Soon after gold was found the very first gold coins were minted. Our internet page on Native Americans features a concise history, photos and a few resources. Now that you’ve thought about the important info to include in the exhibit, it is the right time to produce your exhibit. Much of the info about the gold rush is anecdotal.

A rush typically starts with the discovery of placer gold created by someone. In just 3 decades, the Gold Rush produced an important population expansion composed of over twenty unique nationalities and accelerating California into statehood at the cost of the Native American cultures. He attracted immigrants from around the world. It helped complete the first transcontinental railway in the middle of the century to get people to the west coast as fast as possible.

Not every one of the prospectors were American. Miners also brought European diseases like smallpox. A number of the miners did not make massive profits since they were late to the show and a great deal of the gold was already gone. A miner had to discover an ounce of gold per day merely to break even.
