What Does Vicariously Mean?
Vicarious!!!! It sounds cool, cutting edge, and powerful. It makes you feel smart if you use it correctly. But how many of us know what it means?
Vicarious (as defined by the dictionary): experienced in the imagination through the feelings or actions of another person, or acting or done for another
So how do we define vicarious or living vicariously through another person? We often hear someone say “I am living vicariously through . . . . . . . . . ” This is describing how one person is in his or her imagination experience the feelings of another person. Generally one is referring to living out some type of fantasy lifestyle. Examples include living vicariously through a younger person, or someone that is single and not attached, or a famous athlete or entertainer like a player on the Boston Celtics or LA Lakers. Like the words dogma and empathy, people can find themselves using them liberally without truly understanding what they mean. Humans tend to try and show off via Twitter or Facebook and toss around words and terms they think sound interesting or cool or even “woke”.
How Do You Use Vicarious In A Sentence?
There is ample peer reviewed research on the dynamic between parent and child when parents seek to conquer unfulfilled ambitions via a child.
Fortunately, art and music can help us understand as well. Tool’s brilliant and epic anthem “Vicarious” certainly sheds some light on this topic. “Vicariously I, live while the whole world dies” is just one piece of the lyrics that are open to a variety of different interpretations. See for yourself what you think. Tool is also well known for its intricate and creative use of time signatures and abundantly clever yet obvious in retrospect lyrics. This is well represented in the track “Third Eye” among many other examples with the use of the term dogma. The new album Fear Inoculum is already generating incredibly rave and positive reviews.
