5 Interesting Facts About Dear Evan Hansen
The original location set to host the Broadway debut and production of Dear Evan Hansen was the Belasco Theatre. In September of 2016 the producers announced the musical would be performed at the Music Box Theatre. It still performs to this day at the Music Box Theatre.
The musical was nominated for nine Tony Wards in 2017. It was the winner of six Tony Awards. It was nominated but did not win in the categories of Best Performance By An Actor In A Featured Role In A Musical, Best Lighting Design of A Musical, and Best Direction Of A Musical. Ben Platt was the first Evan Hansen, and he earned a Tony Award for his performance in this role. Since then there have been several Evan Hansens on Broadway and of course on the tour.
The global premiere of Dear Evan Hansen took place on July 10th of 2015 at the Arena Stage in Washington D.C.
Even after critical acclaim in D.C., the musical still made a pit stop Off-Broadway at the Second Stage Theatre starting in March of 2016. It pays to be patient!
Universal Pictures optioned the musical in November of 2018 to make a film version. As it continues to tour North America the musical is selling out shows left and right and even setting box office records like it did in Los Angeles.
