Why Does Ice Float?
The bottom line is that ice floats because it is less dense than liquid water. Scientists conclude that ice is about 9% less dense than liquid water. Therefore, it sits atop liquid water and floats. As water cools below 4 Celsius some interesting facts take shape. SMH, apparently it is that succinct.
The hydrogen bonds adjust. They adjust to hold the negatively charged oxygen atoms apart. This produces a crystal “lattice” which in essence is “ice”.
