What Does Vicariously Mean?

Vicarious!!!!  It sounds cool, cutting edge, and powerful.  It makes you feel smart if you use it correctly.  But how many of us know what it means?

Vicarious (as defined by the dictionary): experienced in the imagination through the feelings or actions of another person, or acting or done for another  

So how do we define vicarious or living vicariously through another person?  We often hear someone say “I am living vicariously through . . . . . . . . . ”  This is describing how one person is in his or her imagination experience the feelings of another person.  Generally one is referring to living out some type of fantasy lifestyle.  Examples include living vicariously through a younger person, or someone that is single and not attached, or a famous athlete or entertainer like a player on the Boston Celtics or LA Lakers.  Like the words dogma and empathy, people can find themselves using them liberally without truly understanding what they mean.  Humans tend to try and show off via Twitter or Facebook and toss around words and terms they think sound interesting or cool or even “woke”.
