When he was shot he was seeing the play “Our American Cousin”. His bodyguard left the position few minutes before his assassin, John Wilkes Booth, arrived. When escaping from the stage John Booth broke his ankle by landing awkwardly on the foot. He raised himself up and yelled, “Sic semper tyrannis!” Meaning in Latin “Thus always to tyrants” (which is Virginia State motto).
