Working in a Warehouse: What Is It Like?

Are you among the 65% of workers on the hunt for a new job? If so, you might be looking at warehouse jobs to get a new career direction. But if you’ve never worked in this kind of setting, you probably don’t know what to expect.

Don’t worry — we have you covered. Read on to learn what warehousing and fulfillment services is like!

Understand the Different Types of Jobs

No two warehouse jobs are the same. You may be assigned to a role where you track, gather, and scan items that are part of a particular order. Or you may scan items to help with inventory control.

In another role, you might be moving large pallets of inventory to help make room for new inventory. And some workers will be in charge of packing items for shipments. With so many roles in a warehouse, you may be able to rotate to different ones depending on need.

Enjoy a Better Sense of Structure

With warehouse work, you can expect organization and structure to be a normal part of the process. After all, with 18% of small businesses failing after one year, a good warehouse needs to be efficient to thrive.

Different areas of the warehouse will be devoted to different parts of the process. For instance, one corner may be for loading and unloading. Another area might be where workers pack items in preparation for pickups.

In addition, you’ll notice that the lanes within the warehouse are marked clearly. This is to help avoid congestion and collisions.

Know That Safety Is a Priority

Since warehouses contain moving equipment and large quantities of inventory, there is a risk of workplace injury. Fortunately, you’ll go through thorough safety training to ensure you can do your job safely.

Safety training may cover skills such as driving forklifts. You’ll also learn the proper way to lift heavy items or communicate with team members in a noisy environment. Further, your manager will equip you with goggles, vests, and hard hats to keep you safe during the workday.

If you are injured on the job, you may be entitled to worker’s compensation to help defray medical costs. Workers’ compensation injuries can include burns, fractures, and strains.

Work in a Team Environment

Finally, one of the biggest perks of working in a warehouse is the ability to do so as part of a team. You won’t be working alone in isolation. Instead, you’ll work alongside team members to streamline inventory control, shipment schedules, and more.

You can talk while you work, too. This is a great way to build camaraderie with your fellow workers. When you work in a supportive team, your shift will feel like it’s moving along quickly!

Consider Working in a Warehouse

Working in a warehouse can be a rewarding way to contribute to an efficient operation as part of a team. You’ll get safety training to make sure you can perform your duties safely. And you’ll work in an environment where the jobs vary but the sense of structure is consistent.
