How to Do CPR On Adults in an Emergency

Are you looking for a way to help people in need when faced with an emergency?

First aid is all about knowing when and how to step in to help. Whether you’re taking a job as a security guard or you’re a parent looking to keep your family safe. Knowing how to do CPR is essential.

Do you know how to do CPR on adults?

For a quick guide to essential CPR lessons, keep reading. You’ll learn when it’s safe to step in and how to help in a crisis.

1. Assess the Situation

The first step is to assess the situation and ensure your safety and the safety of others around you. Make sure the area is free from any hazards that could harm you or the person in need of help. If there is any immediate danger, such as a fire or an electrical hazard, address it before proceeding.

2. Call for Help

If there are other people nearby, ask someone to call emergency services immediately. Provide clear and concise information about the situation and the location.

If you are alone, make the call yourself before starting CPR. You must get professional medical help as soon as possible.

3. Open the Airway

Tilt the person’s head back using one hand on the forehead and two fingers under the chin. This action helps to open the airway by lifting the tongue away from the back of the throat. If you suspect a neck or spinal injury, use the jaw thrust technique instead of tilting the head.

4. Check for Breathing

Place your ear close to the person’s mouth and nose. Look for chest movement while checking for breathing.

Do this for no more than ten seconds. If the person is not breathing or only gasping, you need to start CPR immediately.

5. Begin Chest Compressions

Position yourself beside the person, kneel, and place the heel of one hand in the center of the chest. Place your other hand on top, interlocking your fingers. Keep your elbows straight and use your upper body weight to push down hard and fast.

Compress the chest at least two inches deep and at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute. Allow the chest to recoil between compressions.

6. Provide Rescue Breaths

After 30 compressions, open the airway again by tilting the head back and lifting the chin. Pinch the person’s nose shut and provide two rescue breaths. Each breath should last about one second and make the chest rise.

If the chest does not rise, reposition the head and try again. Continue with cycles of 30 compressions and two rescue breaths.

7. Continue CPR Until Help Arrives

Continue until medical professionals arrive or until the person shows signs of life. If you become too tired to continue, or if the scene becomes unsafe, you can stop and wait for professional help to arrive.

Performing CPR correctly can increase the chances of survival.
