
Every maintenance shop has certain drill bits that tend to go missing more quickly than others. These are the ones technicians grab when they need a new hole for a mounting bracket, modify an electrical enclosure, or anchor into a concrete wall. The issue arises when the right bit isn’t available, leading someone to consider using the nearest alternative.
The drill bit types maintenance managers should keep stocked should match the work happening around the facility. A useful inventory doesn’t need dozens of specialty options collecting dust. It needs dependable bits for the materials crews encounter regularly, along with a few choices for those jobs where a general-purpose bit won’t cut it.
A little planning at the tool cabinet can save technicians from improvising once the work starts.
1. Keep HSS Bits for the Everyday Jobs
High-speed steel (HSS) twist bits are versatile tools for routine maintenance tasks like drilling pilot holes in softer metals, wood, or plastic, depending on the manufacturer. To avoid replacing entire sets, monitor which sizes wear out most often, stock extras, and organize them for easy access.
Keep bits sharp to prevent overheating and damage; replace dull or worn bits promptly. OSHA requires employers to regularly inspect tools to ensure safety, making routine checks essential rather than optional.
2. Bring Out Cobalt for Harder Metal
When technicians regularly work with stainless steel or other harder metals, cobalt alloy bits can make a useful addition to the shop. Manufacturers design these bits to tolerate more heat during demanding metal drilling than standard HSS options.
That makes them a better fit for certain equipment components or tougher metal hardware.
They also cost more, which gives maintenance managers a reason to store them separately from everyday bits. A clearly labeled cobalt set helps technicians reserve them for the jobs that warrant the added capability.
Match the bit to the metal and follow the manufacturer’s guidance for speed. If the job involves machinery or electrical equipment, crews also need to address hazardous energy before drilling begins.
OSHA’s lockout/tagout requirements cover certain servicing and maintenance activities where unexpected startup or stored energy could injure a worker. The drill bit may feel like the smallest part of the job, but tool selection never replaces the larger work plan.
3. Stock Masonry Bits for Concrete Work
Concrete and masonry require tooling made for the material. Carbide-tipped masonry bits give crews the cutting surface they need for jobs such as installing approved anchors or mounting facility hardware.
This is one area where stocking around actual maintenance work makes more sense than buying an enormous assortment.

4. Give Step Bits a Home Near Electrical Tools
Step bits are the kind of tool that may sit quietly until a technician needs one, at which point nothing else feels quite as convenient.
Their stepped shape lets an operator increase a hole’s diameter gradually in thin material. That makes them especially handy for certain electrical enclosure and sheet-metal jobs.
When a technician needs an opening for an approved fitting, a step bit can reduce the need to work through several conventional bit sizes. The markings along the bit also help the operator stop at the intended diameter.
Check the Enclosure Before Drilling
Technicians should confirm that a field modification won’t conflict with equipment requirements or affect an enclosure’s listing. They also need to know what sits behind the drilling point.
If the work involves servicing electrical equipment, follow the facility’s energy-control procedure first. A convenient bit doesn’t change the electrical hazard.
Loose material needs attention as well. Secure the workpiece rather than holding it by hand while drilling. A bit can catch sheet metal quickly, and once the material starts spinning, the operator loses control of the job.

Storage matters more with these bits too. Tossing one beneath heavier tools can leave it bent before anyone notices. Give extra-long bits a dedicated case or rack where technicians can see their condition before grabbing one.
Let the Work Orders Build Your Inventory
A maintenance manager doesn’t need to guess which drill bits deserve shelf space. The work-order history can offer a good starting point.
Look at the materials crews encounter most often. Pay attention to the bit sizes technicians replace repeatedly. Recurring electrical enclosure work may justify more step bits, while frequent facility mounting work may call for a deeper masonry selection.
A quick cabinet review can also uncover bits that should have disappeared months ago:
