The History and Popularity of Escape Rooms

Escape rooms are a one-of-a-kind experience. They require a curiosity and creativity that no other game can match. So, what’s the history of escape rooms, and why are they so popular? Read on below to find out.

What Is an Escape Room?

Escape rooms are fully immersive games that require logical thinking and a desire to learn how to play. During the experience, you and your friends get locked in a room and need to solve a series of puzzles to get out. Typically, while the clues may require some outside knowledge, you can find everything you need to get out of the room within. This means you only need to worry about having basic problem-solving skills to be successful. The best things you can bring to the escape room are curiosity and a desire to achieve your goal of escaping.

Escape rooms offer an unprecedented amount of freedom and creativity. Usually, there’s more than one way to complete them. Learning to play is simple. Before you attempt to escape, you typically have a video, audio file, or live game master giving you the rules and hinting at a potential starting point.

What Is the History of the Escape Room?

It all began in July 2007.

A company named SCRAP and a man named Takao Kato hosted the first escape room. Initially, the game was for five to six players in a single room. Kato spoke of his desire to create his own story and wanted to invite people to be a part of it. Later, SCRAP became known for its expansive Real Escape Game. In it, they hosted thousands of players in a giant space, which was an unprecedented event. If you recall, the game is typically only done with two to seven people. As such, this method completely revitalized the game. We now find escape rooms in over 60 countries across the world.

Are Escape Rooms for You?

If you like problem-solving and want a fun night out with friends, escape rooms are a perfect activity. It gives competitive players the ability to actively challenge themselves to solve puzzles first. It also offers a space for brainy people to test their wits. For anyone looking for a team-building event, it’s a great workplace activity that encourages teamwork.

In short, escape rooms are a fun way to connect with friends. They’re also a good way to learn to work as a team to achieve a common goal. There’s nothing better than having fun while sharpening your intellectual skills. Now that you know more about the history and popularity of escape rooms, try one out today!
