Different Types of Fiber Optic Connectors

Fiber optic connectors connect fibers and transmit light from one end of the fiber cable to the other. IT pros utilize several different types of fiber optic connectors to help fulfill a range of data transmission demands. Read on to discover the various fiber optic connector types and their specifications.

LC Connectors

The LC connector, or lucent connector, dons a 1.25 mm ferrule, which is a thin tin-coated copper cylinder that prevents improper insertion. Its ferrule is considerably smaller than an SC or ST connector’s ferrule and is roughly half its size.

LC connectors are fitting options for high-density installations. Many fiber optic extenders call for LC connectors due to their small size and stabilizing clip feature.

SC Connectors

SC connectors measure in at 2.5 mm. The snap-in aspect latches in with a push-pull motion. This feature of SC connectors creates a stable and secure connection.

A standout specification of SC connectors is that the Telecommunications Industry Association chose them as the first fiber optic connectors suitable under the TIA-568 standard. Because they’re larger, SC connectors are less widespread than LC connectors.

ST Connectors

Topping off our collection of the different types of fiber optic connectors, we have ST connectors. These connectors are also 2.5 mm in diameter.

What distinguishes ST connectors from the rest are their bayonet mounts and cylindrical ferrules, which secure the fibers. Manufacturers create ST connectors with ceramic, metal, and plastic ferrules.

Selecting the Right Connector

There are many reasons to use fiber optic cables, but the advantages of a quality cable are meaningless without a suitable connector. A couple of considerations for selecting a connector are:

  • Which equipment you’ll plug your fiber cable into
  • Which fibers you’ll use

Determining these two details beforehand will ensure that your connector works with your fragile fibers and other network hardware. Also, consider a connector’s polish type, as polished ends influence back reflection.
