A Brief History About Lamborghini Murciélago

Car enthusiasts know that the Murciélago is a sight to behold and hard to come by. Leave it to Lamborghini to leave us all wanting more. If you love a luxurious ride, especially an Italian-made one, sit back and enjoy our brief history about Lamborghini Murciélago.

A Limited Edition

Did you know the Murciélago was only produced for eight years? Lamborghini manufactured this sleek machine from 2001 to 2009. Today, you’ll be hard pressed to find such a rare luxury sports car. You’ll also need to start saving about $500,000 to own one.

What’s in a Name?

It’s fun to say “Murciélago,” but what does it mean? Murciélago translates as “bat” in Spanish. Ferruccio Lamborghini, who had a passion for bull-fighting, named this unique sports car after a Navarro bull named Murciélago. Needless to say, the bull’s fame skyrocketed.

How Low Can You Go?

You’ve seen sports cars with wide body kits, which are used to give a stealthy, low-to-the-ground look. What makes the Murciélago unique is that it has this look without the need for a body kit. It sits so low that the roof is only four feet from the ground. If you want to feel like Mario Andretti in a race car as you fly around curves, you’ll enjoy the low-riding Murciélago.

Although this Italian beast came from the factory ready to rock, modifications are still available. Choose wisely according to materials. The two most common materials for the Murciélago are carbon fiber and fiberglass; each has its own benefits and pitfalls.

All-Wheel Drive

Many sports cars offer all-wheel drive (AWD) as an option, but the Lamborghini company doesn’t believe the best ideas should be options. The Murciélago comes standard with AWD. So if anyone wants to argue it’s not a good car for all seasons, you have a pretty good comeback.

A Few World Records

The humble Murciélago won’t brag about itself, so we’ll do the bragging for it. Here’s a list of three world records it set in 2002. They happened to have all taken place at the infamous Nardo Ring in Italy:

  1. 189.7 miles covered in an hour
  2. 62 miles in 18 minutes
  3. 100 miles in 30 minutes, 9 seconds by the Pre Series 6

Not bad for a new kid on the block.

Lamborghini is one of the most trusted names in sports cars, and rightfully so. The Italian manufacturer believes in only the best, and it shows. We hope you’ve enjoyed our brief history about the Lamborghini Murciélago. It truly was—and is—a luxury sports car like no other.
