What You Need To Know About an Automatic Bed Leveling System

Out of all the upgrades available to you with your 3D printer, arguably the best one to get is an automatic bed leveling system. These systems work to help you produce better-quality prints with less effort on your part! Read on to learn what you need to know about an automatic bed leveling system for your 3D printer.

How Does Regular Bed Leveling Work?

The Z endstop, a small button situated near the Z axis motor, is used in traditional manual leveling to signal the printer when the nozzle is entirely descended to the print area. Because this does not compensate for the position of the print bed, you’ll have to change the bed’s altitude using axis knobs on the bottom of the build plate until it is the appropriate height from the nozzle. To get it right, this process necessitates a significant amount of personal labor and calibration.

How Does a Leveling System Measure?

An automatic leveling mechanism measures the distance between the nozzle and the bed using a tiny probe near the hot end. The probe identifies when the nozzle has achieved the appropriate offset as the printer lowers the nozzle closer to the print bed. The nozzle can be positioned accurately regardless of the location of the print bed because this accounts for the position of the bed. Furthermore, because the probe is attached to the hot end carriage, it can readily measure various positions on the bed. At the start of a print, the machine probes the print bed in a grid pattern to achieve this.

What Benefits Can You Expect From a Leveling System?

Even though we are quite acquainted with manual leveling, we have found that not having to think about leveling is quite convenient and makes the printer “just work,” especially when you must turn your attention to other things such as temperature and printing speed. We do occasionally have problems with the system, such as the necessity to replace probes that have been twisted or damaged from collisions with failed prints. However, the sensor has shown to be dependable in our experience.

We hope we have answered all your questions about what you need to know about an automatic bed leveling system. If you are going to install one of these upgrades, be sure to read the instructions. While they are easy to install, it might be difficult to diagnose problems if done incorrectly.
