Televisions have come a long way since their early development in the 1920s. Today, advancements have led to televisions with more features and functions than those around only a few decades prior. Screen

The largest and the most visible component of any television is the screen. This part of the television displays the images and videos that you see. The type of screen that television has will determine the quality of its display. LED TVs and their modern counterparts, OLED and QLED TVs, are the most common screen types, though plasma TV screens were all the rage in the ’90s.

Each screen type has its advantages, from its energy efficiency to its color contrast, but most buyers are looking for a screen with high resolution above all else. Modern TVs have resolutions as high as 8K, meaning the screen is 8,000 pixels wide.

Audio

The audio component is responsible for producing the sound you hear when watching TV. There are two main audio systems used in televisions: digital and analog.

Digital audio systems use digital signals to produce sound. Digital signals occur when the device converts the sound into binary before sending it to the audio system, resulting in a high-quality sound.

Analog audio systems convert the sound into an analog signal before sending it to the audio system. This type of system is not as clear as a digital audio system, but it is more affordable.

Tuner

The tuner is the component of a television responsible for receiving the signal that carries the images and videos you see on the screen. This component is either internal or external.

Internal tuners receive over-the-air signals from within the TV’s case. These tuners usually appear similar to the other circuit boards within the device. External tuners, meanwhile, plug into the TV via a port and often look like USB drives.

Logic Board

The logic board is the brain of the television. This large circuit board processes the electrical signals that control the different components of the television. It is also responsible for sending the video and audio signals to the appropriate components of the television.

If you’re shopping for this crucial component, it might seem impossible to determine if what your TV needs is a logic board, motherboard, or mainboard. While it might seem like there’s an important difference between the mainboard and motherboard, each manufacturer’s terminology isn’t what matters. Instead, look for your TV’s model or serial number to help you find the right parts.

Power Supply

The TV part responsible for supplying power to the different television components is the power supply, another circuit board located inside the TV. If your TV won’t turn on and changing outlets (and remote batteries) isn’t making a difference, your power supply is the most likely culprit.
