Smoking Alternatives: What Are Your Options?

Did you know that, on average, people who smoke cigarettes live a decade less than those who don’t? Despite that, millions of Americans still smoke. Over 16 million also live with a smoking-related disease.

So if you smoke yourself, it’s time to consider quitting. Instead, think about switching to smoking alternatives. With these, you might find it easier to stop lighting up cancer-causing cigarettes.

Below, we’ve rounded up the top alternatives to tobacco cigarettes, so read on.

Nicotine Patches

Nicotine patches are a form of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Wearing one daily can help reduce withdrawal symptoms and help you quit smoking. It delivers a steady dose of nicotine, so you don’t have to get it from cigarettes.

Nicotine patches are available in three strengths: 7 mg, 14 mg, and 21 mg. The proper dose depends on how much (or how little) you smoke.

For instance, if you smoke half a pack a day, you might be better off starting treatment with the 21 mg patch. Then, after about 8 to 12 weeks, you can lower your dose to 14 mg.

The goal is to keep reducing the strength until you no longer feel withdrawal symptoms.

Nicotine Gum or Lozenge

Like nicotine patches, nicotine gum or lozenges also deliver nicotine to the body. However, these “edible” smoking cessation products are quicker-acting. They can help relieve cravings soon after they occur.

Consider combining patches with edibles for better withdrawal management. For example, you can wear a patch throughout the day, and if you still get the urge to smoke, you can chew gum or pop a lozenge.

Sugar-Free Chewing Gum or Mints

Suppose you’re already wearing a nicotine patch and have had a few nicotine gum or lozenges. However, you still get a few cravings in between.

In that case, try chewing sugar-free gum or popping a mint to keep your mouth busy. They last longer than cigarettes, so you don’t have to keep relying on nicotine to curb your craving.

Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS)

ENDS include devices like electronic cigarettes (also called e-cigs) and vaporizers (AKA vapes). They’re like regular cigarettes in that you “puff” them.

The chief difference is that ENDS don’t burn tobacco but vaporize nicotine liquid.

There’s conflicting research about the efficacy and safety of ENDS. Some suggest an association between their use and increased smoking cessation. However, the findings aren’t enough to confirm their effectiveness and safety.

If you’re going to try vaping, follow the same dosing guidelines as nicotine patches. Also, consider using a disposable one first, such as the Zovoo Dragbar, Elf Bar, or Air Bar vape. This way, you can see for yourself if they’re worth it without you spending hundreds of dollars.

Try These Smoking Alternatives Today

Remember: Smoking is the leading modifiable cause of preventable deaths. That’s enough reason to quit as soon as possible before it’s too late.

So, try smoking alternatives, from nicotine patches to chewing gum instead. The sooner you switch to these, the sooner you can kick your tobacco habit.
