Parabola Definition

In Greek the phrase “para” means side. “Bole” is a throw.  Parabole in Greek is “placing side by side, application”.  It evolved into “Parabola” in the late 16th century.

Parabola is defined as: a symmetrical open plane curve formed by the intersection of a cone with a plane parallel to its side.

In modern science it is commonly described that a projectile under the influence of gravity follows the path of a parabola.  Any point on a Parabola is at an equal distance from a fixed point and a fixed straight line.  The fixed point is the Focus and the fixed straight line is the Directrix.
