How To Prepare Your Boat for Outdoor Storage

As the boating season ends, it’s crucial to prepare your vessel for outdoor storage to protect it from the elements. Proper preparation prevents costly damage and ensures your boat is ready for the water when spring arrives. Continue reading to learn how to prepare your boat for outdoor storage.

1. Thoroughly Clean the Boat

Start by giving your boat a comprehensive cleaning, both inside and out. Use a marine-safe cleaner to wash the hull, deck, and topside to remove salt, algae, and grime that can cause damage over time. Cleaning the interior prevents mold and mildew from growing during storage.

2. Remove Drain Plugs

Once the boat is clean, remove all drain plugs. This step allows any water from rain or melting snow to exit the boat, preventing it from freezing and expanding, which could crack the hull or damage internal components. Store the plugs in a safe place where you’ll remember to find them next season.

3. Change the Oil and Filter

Old oil contains contaminants that can damage engine components if left sitting for a long period. Change the engine oil and filter before storing your boat. Doing so ensures clean oil protects the engine and prepares it for a smooth start when you take it out of storage.

4. Fill the Gas Tank

Fill your boat’s gas tank to about 90% capacity and add a fuel stabilizer. A full tank minimizes the air space where condensation can form, which prevents water from contaminating the fuel. The stabilizer keeps the fuel from degrading and gumming up the engine.

5. Disconnect the Battery

Disconnect the battery to prevent it from draining over the winter. If you can, remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry location, such as a garage or basement. Consider using a trickle charger to keep it charged while it’s in storage.

6. Protect the Interior

Protect your boat’s interior from moisture and pests. Use moisture absorbers to control humidity and prevent mildew. You can also use pest repellents to keep rodents and insects from making a home in your vessel. Remove all valuables, electronics, and food items.

7. Cover the Boat

Invest in a high-quality, weather-resistant boat cover that fits your boat snugly. The cover is your boat’s primary line of defense against rain, snow, UV rays, and debris. Properly secure the cover and allow for some ventilation to prevent moisture buildup underneath.

8. Inspect the Trailer

Give the trailer a thorough inspection if you are storing your boat on a trailer. Check the tires for proper inflation and signs of wear. Examine the frame for rust, and make sure the lights and brakes are in working order. This inspection ensures the trailer remains safe and reliable.

9. Secure the Boat

Properly secure your boat to prevent theft in outdoor storage solutions. Use a hitch lock and wheel chocks to prevent your boat from moving or theft if it’s on a trailer. Choose a safe storage location, and if possible, position the bow slightly elevated to encourage proper drainage.

Knowing how to prepare your boat for outdoor storage will help you protect your investment, extend its lifespan, and ensure it remains in prime condition for your next adventure. Regular maintenance, proper cleaning, and timely inspections will keep your vessel ready to perform at its best, so you can focus on enjoying your time on the water.
