Extensions vs. Lash Lifts: What’s the Difference?

Extensions and lash lifts. Both can create the appearance of amazing, long, and lifted lashes. But what’s the difference between these two similar treatments? Is there one that’s better than the other? If you want to learn more about extensions and lash lifts and what sets them apart, broaden your lash treatment knowledge with this quick comparison.

Extensions

Extensions, also known as falsies, are fake lashes made from materials like silk, mink, and PBT. These fake lashes are pressed onto the natural lashes using lash- and skin-safe glue. This gives them added color and volume.

Falsies are available in different sizes, curl shapes, volumes, and colors, and provide a complete, if somewhat synthetic-looking transformation.

Lash Lifts

A lash lift is a treatment that enhances the look of the natural lashes. They require a bit more finesse to do than extensions, so cosmetologists should study how to perform them carefully before offering them at their salon.

During a lift, a professional applies a perming solution to the lashes, which breaks down their structural bonds and curls them from the base to the tip. Lifts create the illusion of longer, more voluminous lashes, though they don’t add actual length and volume.

Which Is Better?

Both options are great! It depends on what you or your client want.

Extensions are the better option for customizability and dramatic effect. They’re also lower maintenance than lifts. The one downside is that extensions don’t work for everyone: people with short or sparse lashes can’t get them because falsies won’t stay put if they have nothing to stick to.

This is where lash lifts shine: because they work with what someone already has, anyone can get them. Lash lifts also last longer than extensions—extensions last up to four weeks, while lift results can last up to six. They’re less dramatic looking than extensions and appear very natural, which makes them a fantastic choice for those who want a more subtle look.

So, extensions vs. lash lifts: which is better? For a customized, jaw-dropping look, extensions win, but for something more natural and long-lasting, lifts are the superior choice.
