4 Days When Flying the American Flag Is Mandatory

The national banner constantly represents patriotism, purity, vigilance, and justice. The American flag stands tall daily outside federal buildings, businesses, establishments, and homes as easily recognizable symbolism.

While the nation’s flag code calls for display on all days, there are four days when flying the American flag is mandatory.

Inauguration Day

Inauguration day is when the president- and vice president-elect swear into office. Every four years, this ceremony allows guests and spectators to witness the Presidential Oath of Office, the inaugural address, and the pass in review.

The American flag should fly during inauguration regardless of political affiliation. Five flags stand alongside the West Front of the Capitol for inaugural ceremonies, with the United States banner displayed in the center.

There are flags representing the original colonies to the flag’s immediate right and left.

Constitution Day

Also known as Citizenship Day, Constitution Day honors the development and signing of the United States constitution by the thirty-nine delegates at the Constitutional Convention. The observance takes place every September 17, with activities and parades held to commemorate the events.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance and mourning. Falling on the last Monday in May, this day commemorates all men and women who died in US military service. Memorial Day often gets confused with Veteran’s Day, which honors all individuals who served in the military, living or deceased.

When it comes to Flag Code, the national banner should fly at half-staff until noon.

Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

Another day of observance, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, honors those 2,403 service members and civilians who lost their lives during enemy attacks on Pearl Harbor. Many federal buildings remember Pearl Harbor by flying US flags at half-staff all day and partaking in activities and ceremonies.

The United States flag is a powerful symbol of unity and patriotism that honors many of the country’s influential moments. While there are days when flying the American flag is mandatory, you should showcase the banner at all times while following proper protocol.
