3 Things To Consider When Pursuing a Military Relationship

It’s safe to say that the military lifestyle isn’t for everyone. There are endless hours of duty and deployment that keep one away from their loved ones. When it comes to relationships, things can get a bit tricky.

The unique dynamics inherent to military relationships pose many challenges. You can expect time away from your significant other, round-the-clock responsibilities, and negative, unwarranted opinions from strangers.

Here are three things to consider when pursuing a military relationship:

1. Long Periods Away From One Another

No matter their rank, you’ll want to prep for extended periods away from your partner. Whether six to 12 months in deployment or three weeks in the field, your significant other may not always be in the same house or within your vicinity.

Undoubtedly, time apart is one of the most challenging aspects of a relationship with a service member. However, if you do well spending time in solitude, independence is a valuable tool that can help you make the relationship work.

2. Duties Above All

While your relationship with your partner matters, it helps to remember that their duty may have a higher priority at the moment. Your significant other is committed to handling and fulfilling specific obligations that, if neglected, can cause serious consequences.

You want to be understanding; jobs in the military don’t operate on a nine-to-five schedule. Your service member may leave in the middle of the night, work overnight or be on call. It helps to fill your daily plans with your own interests so that you can keep busy while they’re away.

3. Whether You’re Ready To Be Their Support System

Lastly, your partner may need a robust support system while they carry out their duties. Serving in the military is no easy feat. It is physically and mentally demanding.

When your partner is down, consider lifting their spirits. You can connect with them through texts, calls, and emails.

While it’s easy to romanticize these types of connections, there are always things to consider when pursuing a relationship with someone in the military. They’re tough, but as long as you maintain clear communication and unwavering support, you and your partner can thrive together.
