History

SyFy is a basic cable channel in the United States. It was previously known as the Sci-Fi channel, later shortened to SciFi and eventually SyFy. It is owned and managed by NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. The channel was launched on September 24, 1992. Horror, science fiction, and fantasy are the primary genres on the SyFy channel. As of 2016, more than 92 million American TVs were subscribed to the SyFy channel.

The SyFy channel is the brainchild of cable TV entrepreneurs Mitchell Rubenstein and Laurie Silver. This husband-wife duo signed up 8 of the 10 leading cable operators, back in 1989.

Ownership

Between 1989 and 1992, Mithcell Rubenstein and Laurie Silver owned the SyFy channel. In 1992, they sold the channel to USA Networks. At that time, USA Networks was a joint venture of Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures. In 1994, Viacom Media purchased Paramount Pictures while Seagram purchased Universal Pictures. In 1997, Viacom sold all its rights to the channel to Universal Pictures. Within three years, ownership was transferred to Vivendi Universal. In 2004, Vivendi Universal’s cable TV projects would then merge to form NBC Universal. NBC Universal, in turn, was bought by Comcast Corporations in 2010.
